17.6.2011

Dr. Bonn is a diligent man.  He is warm and optimistic.  There is a certain balance between professional seriousness and casual friendliness that Dr. Bonn does a good job at striking.  As a result, the patient feels comfortable in his office, and confident that they will be cured.
Dr. Bonn is careful with his decisions.  He is judicious with the tests that he orders and the medications that he prescribes.
Dr. Bonn is a good-natured man.  In my rotation with him and previous encounters, I have never seen even the smallest crack in his composure. He is always smiling.  Always patient. Always helpful.
It has been another bloody week of taking patient histories, doing physical exams, and writing prescriptions.   The disease pattern is generally the same: malaria-malaria-typhoid-malaria-malaria.   While I came into this experience with a suitcase full of goals and grand plans for self-enlightenment, right now, I feel that the only thing that really matters is that I should leave this place in some way, shape, or form, better than I found it.
So far, I am happy with the result.  There are ten more days of this left and this is already shaping up to be the most memorable summer of my life.
Yesterday was my birthday and I received the best present I’ve ever received in my life.  The children at the orphanage all made me birthday cards.
