2.6.2011

Here we are.  The team.  The power is out and we are sitting in the living room restoring the original meaning to the phrase “hanging out.” After a couple rounds of two-truths-and-a-lie, I went to the bathroom and “dropped the kids off of school” by candlelight.  After an ice cold shower, I’m ready to close the chapter on another great day in Tanzania.  And so many more left.
Today was the first day in the lab.  We drew blood, pricked fingers, collected stool and urine samples.  The day started off with a crying child struggling with all his might to prevent his blood from being drawn.  It took Jimmy, Ade, and me to hold him down long enough to get a legitimate blood draw.  After that, it was all downhill in terms of difficulty.  One of the British nursing students, Carly, kept us company during our long stretches of downtime.  Aside from the orphanage, she is actively involved with many other charitable projects.  Her mother died when she was a teenager. She wears her mother’s wedding ring.  That’s the story of Carly.  I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to learn more.
The trip into town was successful.  The safari trip is coming together.  We acquired booze and ice cream.  And a cell phone. And wads of Tanzanian shillings.
Tomorrow. Beers. Sunset over Lake Victoria.
